Did you know that the Off Season is the best time to be tested for allergies?
During the “off season” when patients are exposed to the symptom causing allergens, antihistamines and other medication are commonly taken for some relief. Allergy testing cannot be performed without stopping antihistamines and thereby causing return of the symptoms.
During the “off season” when a patient is not exposed to the symptom causing allergens and is symptom free, they can still test positive for allergies when placing a small amount of the allergen under the skin. Therefore, the best time to be allergy tested is during the “off season” when the patient is symptom free and not taking antihistamines. In addition, by starting immunotherapy at this time, it has a chance to reduce symptoms and the need for medications by the time allergy season begins.
